Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for Adolescents & Adults with Eating Disorders

Eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder (BED), and others are critical and potentially fatal illnesses that affect physical, psychological, and social well-being. With specialized clinical care, one can rebuild and resume beneficial eating behaviors to achieve long-term recovery.

The clinicians at Thrive Wellness offer comprehensive and evidence-based treatment that enables you or your loved one to receive expert care with minimal disruption to daily obligations, including school or work.

Our intensive outpatient program (IOP) provides part-time treatment three to five days per week for four hours each day. We offer morning, afternoon, and evening programming so clients can focus on their recovery when it best fits into their schedule. Clients participate in individual, group, and family therapy, as well as nutrition education and counseling, supported therapeutic meals, and more. Topics and themes of group therapy can include interpersonal relationships, mindful movement, and adaptive coping skills. Our unique treatment experience is designed to help individuals restore their relationships with food and their bodies so they can live free from the burdens of an eating disorder.

Our IOP welcomes all genders ages 12 to 65 and offers treatment from 9 to 20 hours per week, including:

  • A personalized treatment plan
  • Group therapy
  • Psychoeducation, skills building, and experiential classes
  • Supervised meals and supported food experiences
  • An individual therapy session
  • An individual nutrition support session
  • An individual psychiatry session
  • Coordination of care with your primary care physician and other providers as needed
  • For adults – an occupational therapy assessment and continued sessions as needed
  • Bi-weekly family therapy (increased if deemed clinically necessary)

Following our program, we offer and encourage aftercare through outpatient therapy to further foster lasting recovery.

FAQs

  • Who should enroll in Thrive’s IOP?

Our IOP is ideal for clients who require more comprehensive eating disorder treatment than provided by their existing medical provider and/or therapist, yet cannot commit to or qualify for a partial hospitalization program (PHP) that interferes more with daily obligations like school and work.

  • What are the days and times of the program?

Our IOP takes place Mondays through Fridays and offers morning, afternoon, and evening programming. The morning track is from 7:30 – 11:45 a.m., the afternoon track is from 12:30 – 4:45 p.m., and the evening track is from 2:15 – 6:30 p.m. During the admissions and intake process, our team will work with you to determine the track that works best for your treatment experience. Clients may attend treatment three to five days per week for four hours each day, depending on their treatment team’s recommendation.

  • Can one participate in the program if they work or are a full-time student?

We have helped many individuals complete treatment while meeting the obligations of their daily lives. Our treatment team is happy to accommodate clients’ schedules and can coordinate sessions later during the program or outside of regular programming hours if and when needed.

  • How is treatment tailored to adolescents and adults, respectively?

At Thrive, we understand that the developmental and cognitive needs of adolescents differ from those of adults. While our program involves group therapy, each client receives a personalized treatment plan, as well as individual sessions with their therapist, psychiatrist, and registered dietitian – all in which their unique needs are routinely assessed and addressed.

For families with adolescents in treatment, your case manager will help you and your child stay connected to critical resources, work with your child’s school to make programming more accessible, and assist with 504 or IEP plans to encourage treatment. We know that education is essential for overall development, so we provide study time to support your child and ensure that their schoolwork remains a priority throughout treatment. Additionally, we place a heavy emphasis on family involvement and empowerment, as a child’s healing journey primarily takes place at home. Through family therapy and supported family meals, carers and other close family members are invited to deepen their own understanding and develop skills to support their loved ones.

  • How long is the program?

Everyone’s healing journey is unique. The duration of one’s treatment is dependent on their progress and preferences. All clients are provided individualized treatment plans and are encouraged to continue treatment until they’ve reached recovery. Often upon completing the program, clients continue their care through outpatient services for long-term recovery and optimal well-being.

  • Will insurance cover the cost of the program?

Thrive Wellness Reno works diligently to secure coverage for your care and has partnered with several insurance providers. Before beginning any treatment or services with Thrive, benefits will be verified and an estimate of the cost will be provided.
