Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for Adolescents with Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are more common than many realize – especially among youth. Nearly thirty million individuals in the United States alone suffer from eating disorders, and 95 percent are between the ages of 12 and 25. With the highest mortality risk of any other mental illness, early intervention and comprehensive care are critical and often life-saving.

Thrive Wellness Waco’s interdisciplinary eating disorder specialists work together to provide integrated, evidence-based treatment that enables your loved one and family to receive expert care with minimal disruption to daily obligations, including school or work.

Our intensive outpatient program (IOP) for adolescents is a three-day to five-day offering tailored to treating teenagers. Before beginning treatment, our team will work with you to determine the amount of programming that would be most effective for your adolescent and family. At the beginning of a client’s first week, our team will host a new client orientation to review goals, structure, attendance, and other elements of the program. Our team will also facilitate a new parents orientation to provide an overview of how they can best support their loved ones on their path to recovery. We believe treatment is most meaningful and successful when an adolescent’s family or trusted support system of loved ones lends a loving hand in healing. Therefore, we actively educate and engage family members in our program so they may confidently encourage their loved one’s recovery.

Our IOP for adolescents ages 12 to 17 involves a minimum of 11 hours of treatment per week, including:
The following options are also available to clients:

The program takes place from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday and from 12:00 – 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday and Friday of each week. Clients participate in both individual and group therapy, nutrition education and counseling, supported therapeutic meals, and more. Topics and themes of group therapy can include body image, mindful movement, and adaptive coping skills. For those individuals with co-occurring conditions such as anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), participation in programming on Wednesdays and Fridays is recommended as treatment includes exposure and response prevention therapy (ERP), which is an effective therapeutic modality for healing.

Following our program, we offer and encourage aftercare through outpatient therapy to further foster lasting recovery.

Our IOP for adolescents is ideal for clients ages 12 to 17 who require more comprehensive eating disorder treatment than provided by their existing medical provider and/or therapist, yet cannot commit to or qualify for a full-time partial hospitalization program (PHP) that interferes with daily obligations like school and work.

Our IOP for adolescents is a three-day to five-day offering that takes place from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday and 12:00 – 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday and Friday of each week. We have helped many individuals complete treatment while meeting the obligations of their daily lives. Our treatment team is happy to accommodate clients’ schedules and can coordinate sessions later during the program or outside of regular programming hours if and when needed.

The first step is scheduling an assessment. During the assessment, your family will meet with our clinical team to discuss the eating disorder and any co-occurring conditions so an appropriate course of care can be curated. An individualized treatment plan will be recommended following the assessment and our team will work with you to schedule a program start date and coordinate your care.

Everyone’s healing journey is unique. The duration of one’s treatment is dependent on their progress and preferences. All clients are provided individualized treatment plans and are encouraged to continue treatment until they’ve reached recovery. Often upon completing the program, patients continue their care through outpatient services for long-term recovery and optimal well-being.

Thrive Wellness Waco currently partners with and accepts Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas for our eating disorder day treatment programs. For those who are not in-network, we are able to pursue options for potential clients and their families to use their insurance benefits. As part of the intake process, our admissions team will walk you through what this entails and provide you with an estimate of potential out-of-pocket costs.
