Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) for Adolescents & Adults with Eating Disorders

Nearly thirty million individuals in the United States suffer from eating disorders, and 95 percent are between the ages of 12 and 25. With the highest mortality risk of any other mental illness, early intervention and comprehensive care are critical and often life-saving when it comes to eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder (BED), and others.

The clinicians at Thrive Wellness Reno offer integrated and evidence-based treatment that enables you or your loved one to receive expert care. By prioritizing treatment, one can establish building blocks and begin developing the skills required for repairing their relationships with food and their body.

Our partial hospitalization program (PHP) provides full-time treatment five to seven days per week for six hours each day. We offer morning, afternoon, partial-day, and all-day programming on weekdays to accommodate clients needing varying amounts of care. Clients participate in individual, group, and family therapy, as well as nutrition education and counseling, several supported therapeutic meals, and more. Topics and themes of group therapy can include interpersonal relationships, mindful movement, and adaptive coping skills. Our unique treatment experience is designed to help individuals restore their health and form the foundations needed to return to work or school, receiving treatment to further promote healing and foster lasting recovery.

Our PHP welcomes all genders ages 12 to 65 and involves a minimum of 30 hours of treatment per week, including:

  • A personalized treatment plan
  • Group therapy
  • Psychoeducation, skills building, and experiential classes
  • Supervised meals and supported food experiences
  • Two individual therapy session
  • An individual nutrition support session
  • An individual psychiatry session
  • Family therapy
  • Coordination of care with your primary care physician and other providers as needed
  • For adults — an occupational therapy assessment and continued sessions as needed

As clients progress on their journey to recovery, it’s common for them to step down a level in care to our intensive outpatient program (IOP). Following our programs, we offer and encourage aftercare through outpatient therapy to encourage lifelong recovery. FAQs

  • Who should enroll in Thrive’s PHP?

Our PHP is ideal for clients who require more extensive comprehensive eating disorder treatment than provided by an intensive outpatient program (IOP), yet cannot commit to or qualify for a residential treatment program.

  • What are the days and times of the program?

Our PHP takes place each day of the week to accommodate varying levels of care needed by clients.

On weekdays, our adolescent track is offered in the mornings from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and our adult track is offered in the afternoons from 12:30 to 6:30 p.m.

    On weekends, programming takes place from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

During the admissions and intake process, our team will work with you to determine the track that works best for your treatment experience. Clients may attend treatment five to seven days per week for six to eleven hours each day, depending on their treatment team’s recommendation.

  • Can one participate in the program if they work or are a full-time student?

Our PHP is designed to provide full-time treatment to clients while minimizing distractions so that their healing and recovery are top priorities. When it is recommended that a client admits to our PHP following clinical assessment, we will work with them to find the track that works best for their schedule and accommodate their needs to the best of our ability. We can also provide documentation and assistance when it comes to advocating for the care they need, whether that be with an employer or school through FMLA, 504, or IEP plans.

  • How is treatment tailored to adolescents and adults, respectively?

At Thrive Wellness, we understand that the developmental and cognitive needs of adolescents differ from those of adults. While our program involves group therapy, each client receives a personalized treatment plan as well as individual sessions with their therapist, psychiatrist, and registered dietitian – all in which their unique needs are routinely assessed and addressed.

For families with adolescents in treatment, your case manager will help you and your child stay connected to critical resources, work with your child’s school to make programming more accessible, and can assist with 504 or IEP plans to encourage treatment. We know that education is essential for overall development, so we provide study time to support your child and ensure that their schoolwork remains a priority throughout treatment. Additionally, we place a heavy emphasis on family involvement and empowerment, as a child’s healing journey primarily takes place at home. Through family therapy and supported family meals, carers and other close family members are invited to deepen their own understanding and develop skills to support their loved ones.

  • How does one get started in the program?

The first step is scheduling an assessment. During the assessment, the client (and family, if the client is an adolescent or an adult who would benefit from having their family present) will meet with our clinical team to discuss the eating disorder and any co-occurring conditions so an appropriate course of care can be curated. An individualized treatment plan will be recommended following the assessment and our team will work with you to schedule a program start date and coordinate your care.

  • How long is the program?

Everyone’s healing journey is unique. The duration of one’s treatment is dependent on their progress and preferences. All clients are provided individualized treatment plans and are encouraged to continue treatment until they’ve reached recovery. As clients progress on their journey to recovery, it’s common for them to step down a level in care to our intensive outpatient program (IOP). Often upon completing the programs, clients continue their care through outpatient services for long-term recovery and optimal well-being.

  • Will insurance cover the cost of the program?

Thrive Wellness works diligently to secure care coverage and partners with many insurance providers. Before beginning any treatment or services with Thrive, benefits will be verified and an estimate of the cost will be provided.
